Nectar, the Vault and few tracks to peep out...

as all you Nectarites know, Luscious Nectar closed it's doors at the end of September to move to a larger, more awesome space. it's now been a month of legal battles, planning and construction, but things are still moving forward towards the goal of larger and more awesome. i've included a picture of the current state as a little tease. a lot has been done, but there is still a lot to do. the most impressive piece of the new place has to be the new downstairs bar. imagine a 20 foot long custom concrete bar top (with color stain being applied soon). very cool! anyway, the current goal is early December for an open and fully functional, larger and more awesome Luscious Nectar. stay tuned for updates.

as Nectar won't be open this Halloween weekend, i've been booked to play at The Vault (friday, october 30). this will be my first dance music gig in a month, so i'm very anxious to get back to the beats. it should be a super fun night. i've been way too busy to do much musical planning for the night, but i'm expecting my set will be much more underground and funky than my usual Nectar beats. i haven't played The Vault in a couple years, but last time was pretty insane. on Friday nights The Vault tends to attract a few techno head snobs that will probably harass me endlessly to play something that the staff will probably promptly ask me to stop playing. whatevs. just gona work on finding what gets the crowd's collective head bob going. hopefully i can sort out a halloween costume by then. ideas?

now for a few tracks i've been diggin this week. enjoy!

pretty lego lights...

hello childrens. today’s story is about a brave young man who makes music that sounds like pretty lights. pretty lights. Pretty. Lights. sometimes there are words, sounds, sights, smells, etc. that take me to a very specific memory pot hole along this rascall flats highway of life. in the lego era of my life (childhood), i loved the pretty, clear, colored legos. what was it about their crystalline nature? how could a simple piece of clear, colored plastic take on the energy of a magic ruby, sapphire, emerald or diamond in my young mind? and when placed in the right spot on your spy jet, police boat or space ship, well, they called forth the energy of something akin to pure awesome. i’ve never really realized it, but I’ve always wondered what that ruby lego would sound like when next to the sapphire one. if the emerald lego in my space scene could talk, what would its voice sound like? well, upon hearing the latest pretty lights album for the first time my pretty lego memories finally found a sound. this, the latest creation of our story’s brave young sonic sound smith, Derek Vincent Smith, gives voice to my childhood legos. please click here to download:"PASSING BY BEHIND YOUR EYES" for the price of zero. enjoy!

in recent rotation...

this first top ten list is a collection of some older tracks that have recently found their way back into steady rotation. over the last two weeks I’ve played gigs for a couple kick ass art shows, and I’ve found myself going down memory lane a bit. back to some of the early dj days at Tiger Bar. a dark, durty, smoke filled Portland bar that hosted some of the most twisted art and music I’ve ever experienced. I played at this bar for about 3 years (i think) and my favorite shows were when the new art would arrive. the following top ten list is a collection of downtempo/trip-hop tracks that take me back to the vibe in that place, but are timeless enough to find their way into my current space. enjoy!

hell is around the corner - tricky

in/flux – dj shadow

danger of love – dj krush (feat. zap mama)

karmacoma – massive attack

lebanese blonde – thievery corporation

climbing up the walls – radiohead (fila brazillia mix)

she’s my lover – kid loco

suzuki - tosca

aftermath – tricky

going under - rocker’s hifi (K&D Session)
